ELWA Housing Repair, Phase 1 (95346)

Updated Description (Sept. 2003) ELWA Houses originated by and for SIM missionaries in the 1950s and '60s. The tropical oceanside environment and war damage and looting in 1990 and 1996 have caused severe deterioration. These houses are now largely occupied by Liberians who have assumed the responsibility for ELWA Ministries of radio, healthcare and education. During the most recent fighting (June-August, 2003), ELWA's campus, untouched by the war, served as refuge for over 2500 people. SIM is ELWA's main ministry partner, and as such we desire to help make sure that the ELWA compound remains a place of vital ministry to the Liberian people. This project aims to provide funds, and open the door for the involvement of short-term teams, for repair of roofs, windows, doors, pluming and electric so that these structures can survive another 50 years. It costs an average of $8,800 to refurbish each house. For instance, the cost to fix H-13 where Augustine Kollie presently lives was $9303.45; $6,756 for the zink roof and supporting wooden beams, $616.00 for the ceiling, $3,338.20 for the windows and “rogue bars,” $815.50 for the doors, $690.75 for the bathrooms, $659 for the electrical work, $580.00 for the floors, $340.00 for the interior and exterior paint, and $257.50 for the concrete work.

Project Amount: $188,034 ($122,914 needed)

ELWA Services Office/Campus upgrade (LR 95348)

The funding of this project will allow SIM Liberia to provide the Capital Resources to assist with the expansion of the ELWA Services department over the next 3 to 5 years. At the present time, both the Services Dept. and the Administration Office are using ELWA Academy rooms--however, within the next 2 to 3 years, the Academy will be expanding their classroom space and will need the rooms. Services already has an existing foundation where a former Services office building stood and was demolished during the war. This foundation will be used to build a new single story office building to house both the Services Dept. and ELWA Administration. In addition, this project will assist ELWA Services in the task of serving the needs of the other ELWA Ministries (Hospital, Radio, Academy). Specifically, the project will allow Services to: (1) better care for the campus, by providing a tractor for mowing the fields and a road grader for road maintenance; (2) provide a phone system to the campus for more effective communication between the various departments, and (3) allow Services to maintain the buildings and facilities better by providing for upgraded shop tools. This project will help us purchase or repair the following items: a photocopy machine, laser printer, computer, key maker, and generator to service all of the radio, hospital, and residences at ELWA.

Project amount: $118,741 ($122,741 needed)
